What Is A Device Driver?

A device driver is a program that monitors and controls the dealings between a specific hardware and the operating system of the computer. Some drivers for the hardware like the keyboard are built in within the operating system but most operating systems require specific drivers to connect the keyboard and other hardware like mouse, disk drive, printer, camera etc. to your computer. The computer just cannot function without the help of the drivers.

Generic Driver

It is generally the operating system itself, it is not required to download or install the generic drivers. The hardware with minimum capacity can be used with the help of the generic driver but may not permit the operation of some specific hardware product attached to your computer system. Some generic drivers may not even support hardware bought from other manufacturers.

Specific Device Drivers

The specific driver is meant for a particular hardware that makes the use of all the features included in that particular hardware permissible. Certain specific drivers are designed to act for a group of hardware.

Beta Driver

This hasn’t yet been certified by the Microsoft for their operating system; these Beta drivers do not have any support system and requires a sound knowledge of the hardware system for accessing them. If these drivers fail there is not option left other than to switch to the old drivers.

Location of the Device Drivers

The device drivers are automatically installed in the operating system and allow you to access a particular hardware as soon as the computer is turned on. The device drivers include disk drivers, processors, printers and motherboard chipset.

Sometimes, your operating system may not have the specific drivers and you need to install it after the installation of the device. Generally, the manufacturer provides all the required device drivers.
Drivers do not function if the hardware belongs to a different operating system or different version. New hardware needs to be compatible with the driver installed for smooth functioning of the computer system.

Some drivers are required to be installed manually; they are mainly files with .SYS extension names for DOS operating system and .DRV for windows. You can search for the drivers at setup.exe file and if you are aware of the specific location you can type the name at the prompt and browse through the folder yourself.

Keep a back-up

You require to have a back-up copy of your device drivers on your pc in a flash memory or a CD. It is good to have one than one backup copies of your device drivers in case you have a problem in working with the one installed. But make sure that your back-up copy is kept away from magnetic fields, direct sunlight, fire or water.
